Enhancing Occupational Therapy Education in Sri Lanka: Insights from a Commonwealth Fellowship at the University of Bradford

Introduction / Rationale: International collaboration plays a crucial role in strengthening occupational therapy (OT) education, ensuring alignment with global standards and best practices. Two Sri Lankan academics undertook a Commonwealth Fellowship at the University of Bradford, UK, from February to May 2024. The visit aimed to enhance curriculum development, teaching methodologies, clinical placement structures, and accreditation processes to improve OT education in Sri Lanka.

Objectives:

The fellowship focused on:

  • Understanding OT curricula and revising Sri Lanka’s curriculum.
  • Observing lesson planning and student-centered teaching approaches.
  • Learning about diverse assessment methods for OT students.
  • Exploring clinical placements, community OT services, and clinical governance structures.
  • Observing evidence-informed teaching practices.
  • Examining the WFOT accreditation process and its implementation.
  • Investigating postgraduate education opportunities and CPD structures.

Methods / Approach: The fellowship involved attending OT lectures, engaging in curriculum discussions, meeting experts by experience, and networking with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT). The academics also visited Oxford Brookes University and St Mary’s University to meet OT leaders and gain insights into educational advancements. Meetings with faculty, students, and the library enriched their learning experience.

Results / Practice Implications: Key takeaways included insights into problem-based learning, innovative assessment strategies, and interdisciplinary teaching. Immediate applications involve curriculum updates, improved clinical training, and fostering international collaborations.

Conclusion / Significance to the Occupational Therapy Profession: This fellowship underscores the value of global academic exchanges in OT education. The acquired knowledge will contribute to strengthening Sri Lanka’s OT training, enhancing curriculum design, teaching methodologies, and clinical education while advancing WFOT accreditation efforts.
