AI meets OT: Occupational therapy education and shaping future-ready practitioners

Introduction: This project highlights the growing impact AI has on OT practice, research, and education.

Objectives: The purpose of the work is to inspire change and shape future-ready practitioners. The work

 • Assesses the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) within occupational therapy (OT),

 • Supports the readiness of OT educational programs to integrate AI into the curriculum, and

 • Creates a resource for ethical and beneficial use of generative AI technologies.

Methods: Authors applied multiple methods in a research and development approach. Authors conducted a scoping review to assess the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) within the profession. Authors interviewed and surveyed a variety of academic knowledge users at a local level to establish baseline knowledge and needs for integration of AI into an occupational therapy curriculum. Based on the results of the scoping review, interviews, and surveys, the first author designed exemplar learning activities and resource materials.
Results: Completed scoping review and created exemplar learning materials and resources. The evidence indicates a growing trajectory of content and worldwide inquiry.
Conclusion: This research explores the perspectives of OT students and faculty, demonstrates how AI can be systematically integrated into an OT curriculum to reflect the current demands of the healthcare industry, and provides insight on a macro level. There is a need to expand AI inquiry beyond research and development. Broad knowledge users including policy makers and funders will also benefit from the development of new standards and ethics related to AI. National and international conversations provide an opportunity for a global exchange of resources.
