Using the Participative Occupational Justice Framework to support sustainability: The example of the co-creation of the Occupational therapy community committed to equity and the environment

Introduction: In a context where the climate crisis exacerbates pre-existing social injustices, including occupational injustices, it is important to reflect as occupational therapists on strategies that can be adopted to mitigate its effects in terms of justice. To this end, the co-creation of a community of occupational therapists who wish to reflect on questions of equity, justice and occupational opportunities in relation to the climate crisis was a natural step. To this end, the Occupational therapy community committed to equity and the environment (C4E) was created in 2019, based on the Participative Occupational Justice Framework (POJF).

Objectives: The aim is to describe the genesis of this community, which is based on the POJF. Since this framework has the potential to mobilize various actors to support social transformation and justice, it inspired the co-foundation of the C4E.

Approach: Using a descriptive and narrative approach, this communication presents the POJF’s six major iterative and non-linear steps that were used to co-create the C4E.

Results: Each step of the POJF is described, thus exemplifying the actions undertaken to co-create the C4E. Also, some projects of the C4E to support sustainability are described to inspire similar initiatives.

Conclusion: Using the POJF provides a solid basis for developing sustainable initatives to reverse occupational injustices, and even intergenerational occupational injustices. It is hoped that the description and illustration of the six steps of the POJF will inspire other occupational therapists to engage in social transformation processes aimed at greater justice in the context of climate emergency.
