Innovative use of writing in Practice: Therapeutic applications for occupational therapy

Introduction: Writing has the power to transform perceptions, identities, and experiences. It has spanned centuries as a form of expression, communication, and idea creation.  Whereas psychologists have long used writing as a modality for therapeutic benefit, despite its potential, little is written about its use in occupational therapy. With the advances of technology, writing may be used in various forms including traditional paper-based applications to online venues offering collaboration with others.  This presentation will review existing research and potential application of use of writing as a modality for occupational therapists.

Objectives: 1) Discuss the differences between creative, personal and therapeutic writing 2) Present current research related to the potential uses of writing in occupational therapy 3) Facilitate participant reflection on how writing may be used in practice.

Approach: This presentation will provide foundational knowledge of various types of writing, how it may be used across the lifespan and settings, and practical considerations including therapist training, planning, and implementation.

Practice Applications: The use of creative, personal and therapeutic forms of writing is underutilized in occupational therapy. From traditional forms of writing to the use of AI to enhance creativity and collaboration, therapists have the opportunity to use this modality in a multitude of practice areas and settings.

Conclusion: The use of various forms of writing has untapped potential in occupational therapy. Participants will come to understand application to their own personal and professional lives.
