Reliability Validation of the Chinese Version of the Sensory Profile Second Edition Child Version

Background
The Sensory Profile (SP) is widely used in Taiwan to assess sensory processing, covering multiple sensory systems, modulation, and behavioral responses. The Sensory Profile 2 (SP-2) is an updated version with expanded age applicability and revised content. Our team completed the cross-cultural adaptation of the Chinese version of SP-2 (SP-2-C), but its reliability has not yet been established. This study aimed to validate the reliability of the SP-2-C Child Version in children with developmental disabilities.

Objective
This study examined the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the SP-2-C Child Version in children with developmental disabilities.

Methods
Caregivers of children aged 3–14 years with developmental disabilities were recruited from a medical center. Caregivers with an education level below junior high school were excluded. A total of 46 caregivers completed the SP-2-C questionnaire twice, one week apart. Internal consistency was analyzed using Cronbach’s alpha, and test-retest reliability was assessed with the Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC).

Results
The children had a mean age of 5.1 years (SD = 1.32), and 84% were boys. Most caregivers (91%) had a university-level education or higher. The four sensory processing dimensions demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.943–0.956) and strong test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.895–0.928).

Conclusion
The SP-2-C Child Version demonstrated high reliability, supporting its use in assessing sensory processing in children. The four sensory processing dimensions effectively reflect different sensory processing functions and provide stable assessment outcomes. Future studies should include more diverse populations to enhance representativeness.
