Praxis assessment of children under 3 years old from the perspective of Ayres’ Sensory Integration approach

The brain integrates innumerable sensations from different body organs, producing appropriate responses so that we can respond to the demands of the environment1. When this process does not occur in harmony, Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) is triggered. Ayres2 studied praxis difficulties and demonstrated how SID can affect functional abilities3, developing the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT) to assess children aged between 4 and 8 years and 11 months with these difficulties4. However, the development of praxis in toddlers was little studied by Ayres.
Aims: To identify in the literature assessment instruments for praxis in Sensory Integration for children aged 0 – 12 years and to categorize the domains and items for their adaption, creating an instrument that makes it possible to assess the praxis of toddlers.
Method: Methodological research with a quantitative approach. Following the COSMIN guidelines for instrument development5, this study carried out the first 5 phases: 1- Scope review, to verify the existence of instruments for praxis in toddlers; 2 – Selection of the instruments; 3 – Analysis of the psychometric rigor of the instruments, 4- description of the content; 5- study of the domains and items. Results: In the literature review, 95 articles were analyzed and 10 instruments were located, of which 9 showed good psychometric measures, while 9 domains and 328 items that assess praxis were identified. No instrument directly assesses the praxis of toddlers.
Conclusions: The development of an instrument to assess the praxis of toddlers will help occupational therapists make diagnoses and intervene early.
