WFOT Symposium – Artificial Intelligence

Description

In this WFOT Congress 2026 Symposium on Artificial Intelligence, leading occupational therapists and educators examine how AI is beginning to reshape occupational therapy across practice, education, research, and publishing. Featuring Jessica Francis, Ana Malfitano, Miini Minami Teng, and Marc-André Pellerin, and chaired by Karen Jacobs, the session explores both the promise and the complexity of AI in the profession, from administrative efficiencies and clinical support tools to the wider implications for decision-making, ethics, and professional accountability.

The discussion highlights the need for occupational therapists to engage with AI critically and proactively rather than treating it as either a threat or a solution in itself. Speakers reflect on issues including scientific integrity, bias, privacy, consent, governance, and the growing importance of AI literacy in occupational therapy education. Across the panel, a clear message emerges: AI may become an increasingly useful tool, but it must remain guided by human judgement, professional values, and person-centred practice. Advancing occupational therapy in this space will depend on thoughtful leadership, strong safeguards, and a commitment to using technology in ways that are ethical, equitable, and grounded in real-world care.
