Introduction/Rationale: Sensory modulation interventions are well-established in inpatient mental health; however, their use in other adult mental health settings, such as community-based settings, remains less explored. As occupational therapists increasingly support adults with diverse sensory needs, gaining insight into how and when these strategies are applied is essential for advancing evidence-based practice.
Objectives: To investigate the extent to which occupational therapy practitioners incorporate sensory modulation strategies when working with adults and to explore the specific methods used in clinical practice across various mental health settings.
Methods/Approach: An onlinesurvey with both open and close ended questionswas developed by a team of OT clinicians, student, andresearchers. Through the survey, practicing occupational therapy professionals were askedabout their application of sensory modulation interventions with adult clients.
Results/Practice implications: Survey responses have been received from N=110 OT practitioners as of March 1, 2025. Once the survey window closes, responses will be explored forcurrent trends, challenges, and opportunities in integrating sensory modulation into adult care. Findings will highlight practitioner experiences, effective interventions, and practical implementation strategies across different practice contexts.
Conclusion/Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: This research will expand understanding of sensory modulation implementation beyond inpatient settings and provide actionable insights for practitioners working with adults. By identifying best practices and barriers, this work aims to strengthen the evidence base and enhance occupational therapy’s role in addressing sensory needs across diverse adult populations.
