Evidence based strategies to support student wellness while on fieldwork

Introduction/Rationale: The transition from the classroom to fieldwork presents unique challenges for occupational therapy students, potentially contributing to increased stress and potential burnout. Fieldwork educators also experience stress related to student preparedness, clinical demands, and role adaptation. Supporting wellness during fieldwork is essential for both students and educators to ensure a positive learning experience, development, and professional sustainability.

Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the current mental health challenges among students in higher education.

2. Identify common stressors during fieldwork.

3. Implement strategies to support student and educator wellness in fieldwork settings.

Methods/Approach: This session will provide an overview of student and educator stressors and explore evidence-based wellness strategies to mitigate those stressors. Participants will engage in interactive discussionsto examine practical approaches such as self-reflection, communication techniques, and peer support. Institutional and community resources will also be highlighted.

Results/Practice implications: Wellness strategies integrated into fieldwork can enhance student resilience, reduce burnout, and improve learning outcomes. Fieldwork educators who adopt these strategies can foster a more supportive learning environment while managing their own well-being and supporting the growth of the occupational therapy profession.

Conclusion/Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: Addressing wellness in fieldwork supports student success, educator satisfaction, and the long-term sustainability of occupational therapy practice. By promoting resilience and well-being, this session contributes to a healthier learning environment for both students and practitioners.
