Mga Kwentong Buhay: Lived Experiences of Parents of Children with Disabilities Availing Free Occupational Therapy Services in EAC-Manila

Introduction / Rationale: This study examines the lived experiences of parents raising children with disabilities in the Filipino context. It highlights the emotional, financial, and social challenges faced by parents while accessing free occupational therapy services, aiming to fill the gap in literature about their unique realities and needs.

Objectives: The research aims to:

  • Explore why parents seek occupational therapy services for their children with disabilities.
  • Identify the challenges parents face in accessing these services.
  • Analyze the coping strategies used by parents to navigate these challenges.

Methods / Approach: Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved two mothers of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and accompaniment during therapy sessions at a private college in Manila, and additional online interviews. Narrative and thematic analyses were employed, triangulating data from interviews, recordings, and observations.

Results / Practice Implications: Key findings identified themes of financial constraints, emotional journeys toward acceptance, personal growth, and the role of community support. Both mothers demonstrated resilience, leveraging family and community networks. However, systemic barriers, including limited affordable therapy options, remain significant. Insights from this study advocate for better policy support and accessible therapeutic services for families.

Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: The study underscores the importance of holistic support for parents of children with disabilities. It calls for integrated policies to improve therapy accessibility and highlights critical role of community and healthcare professionals in alleviating the burdens of caregiving. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of parental challenges, offering valuable insights for occupational therapy professionals to tailor interventions and support systems in the Philippine context.
