Protecting occupations and the environment; Occupational therapy as a force for climate change.

Introduction / Rationale
Climate change and environmental degradation significantly impact human occupations and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. Occupational therapy is uniquely positioned to address these challenges, but limited education on sustainability hinders its integration into practice.

Objectives
This project aimed to develop and evaluate an educational course to enhance occupational therapists’ knowledge and confidence in integrating sustainability into practice.

Methods / Approach
The course, delivered virtually, included interactive modules on the relationship between occupations and environmental impacts, sustainable practices, and advocacy for occupational and environmental justice. Real-world examples and interdisciplinary perspectives enriched the content. Data were collected through pre- and post-course surveys measuring knowledge and confidence, and qualitative feedback was analyzed to identify themes from participant experiences.

Results / Practice Implications
Participants reported increased confidence and understanding of sustainability in occupational therapy. Qualitative themes emphasized the value of practical examples, advocacy discussions, and the instructor’s passionate approach as key motivators. Many attendees applied sustainable practices immediately in their work and advocated for integrating this content into occupational therapy education and accreditation standards.

Conclusion / Significance to the Occupational Therapy Profession
This project highlights the vital role of sustainability education in advancing occupational therapy. By equipping practitioners to address climate change, the profession can promote environmental and occupational health, advocate for justice, and lead in shaping a sustainable future.
