Enhancing wellbeing in rural agricultural communities through occupational therapy and interdisciplinary collaboration

Introduction/Rationale: Rural agricultural communities face unique challenges that impact mental and physical health, including limited access to healthcare resources and occupational stress. Addressing these issues requires innovative, culturally responsive interventions that promote resilience and occupational well-being. Integrating global best practices provides opportunities to adapt strategies for diverse rural populations.

Objectives: This initiative aims to:

                  1.             Develop interdisciplinary programs focusing on mental health, physical wellness, and occupational well-being for rural populations.

                  2.             Foster community resilience by integrating occupational therapy principles into agricultural settings.

                  3.             Inform national and global guidelines addressing rural health community needs.

Methods/Approach: Collaborating professionals and academics in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and rural health organizations partnered with international initiatives like ifarmwell to deliver key community development programs including

                  •               Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training: Equipping community members to address mental health challenges.
                  •               Farm Fit Exercises: Promoting physical wellness.
                  •               Farm Walks: Combining physical activity with community engagement.
                  •               Digital Platforms: Offering accessible well-being tools.

Results/Practice Implications: Preliminary outcomes indicate increased mental health awareness and improved physical activity levels among participants. The interdisciplinary approach has fostered stronger community ties and highlighted the role of occupational therapy in promoting health in agricultural settings.

Conclusion: This initiative underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing occupational therapy practices. By addressing the unique needs of rural populations, it contributes to the development of culturally relevant strategies that enhance occupational well-being and community resilience globally.
