Introduction: Since 2014, the NPO Japan Social Basketball Association has been promoting basketball competitions for people with mental disabilities in Japan. However, these activities have been limited to domestic events, and no international tournaments have been held.
Objectives: The objective of this initiative is to hold an Asian Basketball Tournament for players with mental disabilities, aiming to establish and promote its progress and development.
Methods: The preparation period was from August 2021 to December 2024. Supporters involved in sports for people with mental disabilities in Taiwan and South Korea participated in the planning. A total of four online meetings and 16 email conferences were held. After deliberation, Taiwan was selected as the host country, and the tournament was conducted in accordance with FIBA rules.
Results: Two countries, Taiwan and Japan, participated in the tournament. Other countries were unable to complete their preparations and opted to join in the next event. A total of 28 players from Taiwan and Japan participated. In the 5×5 event, the Japanese team won the tournament, while Taiwan achieved victory in the 3×3 event. After the matches, players and supporters engaged in interactions and exchanges.
Conclusion: From the perspective of supporting the recovery of people with mental disabilities, the holding of an international tournament carries significant meaning. It was suggested that increasing the number of participating countries and further developing the event are essential for its continued sustainability.
