Introduction: GenZ, those born between 1995-2012, were raised with technology integrated into their everyday life. Research on GenZ highlights limited attention spans, increased anxiety, and the negative impact of screen time on academic performance, emphasizing the need for alternative instructional approaches. This generation’s savvy in gaming, utilizing social media and using advanced technological tools may be very different than those who are guiding them in their higher education coursework and educational journey.
Connectivism is an adult learning theory that connects peers with ideas and technology to meet the needs of GenZ. Edutainment is an approach that has become increasingly more popular in higher education. This method represents a novel approach to engaging GenZ students in academic environments. However, the effective implementation of edutainment requires educators to possess a strong proficiency in digital technologies, combined with contemporary learning theories, such as connectivism.
Approach: This poster examines the current literature and evaluates the intersection of connectivism theory, the needs of GenZ, and edutainment.
Objectives: At the end of this poster session the learner will:
Describe the connectivism theory in adult learning
Identify the needs of GenZ related to higher education
Apply edutainment methods supported in the literature
Practice Implications: Educators must understand the learning needs of GenZ for teaching effectiveness. Research shows that GenZ responds well to edutainment. Connectivism is a framework for educators to successfully engage learners.
Significance to the Occupational Therapy Profession: OT educators should apply connectivism theory to integrate edutainment strategies, engaging GenZ learners.
