Guidelines for writing and publishing research

Introduction: From the preparation to the publication of a manuscript, there are many challenges. Writing, submitting, and revising a manuscript can be a daunting task. This panel of experienced editors, reviewers, and authors will give participants behind-the-scenes perspectives to help them navigate the process from conceptualization to successful publication.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to (1) Conceptualize, develop, and write a manuscript with consideration for the intended audience, journal, and category of submission. (2) Navigate the submission and publication process using journal-specific guidelines, well-written cover letters, and constructive responses to reviewers’ feedback.

Approach: The panel of experts will present their perspectives on the publication process and provide a writing workshop that invites the participants to apply the concepts that are presented to their own ideas, research, and other written work.

Practice Implications: The writing workshop will teach the participants how to organize, develop, and professionally present their work in a written format. In addition, the participants will learn how to navigate the publication process through making decisions regarding submission, writing good cover letters, and responding to feedback from editors and reviewers.

Significance to the Profession: To advance the profession of occupational therapy, there is a need for well-written articles that articulate our profession’s evidence, policies, curricula, and issues. This presentation and workshop will help occupational therapists expand the knowledge base of the profession through the successful dissemination of their work.
