Innovative eating disorder ‘Scrapbooking’ in post meal supervision

An Occupational Therapy (OT) intervention to enable eating disorder (ED) patient's understanding of their relationship with their own ED has been developed in a General Adolscent Unit, as part of an Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) ED pilot.  The OT intervention focuses on ‘scrapbooking’ a recognsied evidenced based practice to help reducte anxiety, which the OT team have adapted to deliver during post meal supervision sessions, to enable ED patient's deeper understanding of the occupational barriers associated with their ED. The intervention is underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and follows a 30-day cycle. There are 25 activity boxes and 5 catch up sessions (one of which is carried out each day) covering all different aspects of the patient's relationship with their ED. Daily activity worksheets, photos and reflections are fixed into a decorated scrapbook for each ED patient to learn about themselves, which they take home at the end of their admission.  The supervision sessions can be done as 121 or in a group. The topics include:  Volition: Self-esteem  •The effects of self-negative talk  •Positive ways to nurture and improve body image  •Increase awareness of how ED impacts self and others  •Increase awareness and insight into what an individual finds important    Habituation:  Emotional Regulation / Coping skills  • Relaxation  •Impact of daily routines and how to manage them with ED  •Weekend/ Leisure planning.   Performance Capacity and Skills:  Assertive skills/ anger management   Environment: Rapport and social groups  •Life events  •Relapse planning  Finally, there is very little evidence around OT working with ED and innovation in this field is lacking. So far, the qualitative data from our ED patients is encouraging, based on their comments and participation about the activity boxes and scrapbooking. It is hoped that a reasarch project with follow, so we can eventually measure the overall effectiveness of this OT intervention and more widely roll it out in community ED services.
