Competence Plan – A Support for Practice Supervisors

Introduction / Rationale: Education of Healthcare personnel is one of the statuary responsibilities of the specialist health service in Norway. The need to strengthen the quality of professional education practice studies is highlighted in a Norwegian Parliamentary report and a national practice project “Quality in Practice Studies”. In occupational therapy (OT) education, clinical practice constitutes one-third of the study, and Oslo University Hospital (OUH) has guidelines for conducting educational activities. OT service at OUH has for several years worked to improve the quality of practice education. As part of this initiative, a competence plan for supervising OT students during their practice placements has been developed. The purpose for the plan is to increase quality and make educational activities visible. The competence plan includes an overview of required tasks, competence opportunities, and other resources such as relevant professional theory and advice for supervision. The plan will apply across all clinics in mental and somatic health at OUS.

Objectives: To gain knowledge on how a competence plan for student practice supervision can enhance quality and support in the practice supervisor role.

Methods / Approach: OT practice supervisors at OUH will use the competence plan during three practice placements in 2024/2025. A survey will be distributed to all practice supervisors and their leaders to collect their experiences.

Results / Practice Implications: The results will enhance quality of practice placement at OUH and develop and improve the competence plan.

Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: Contribute to strengthening the quality of practice and strengthening organizing and performe the practice supervisor role.
