The Role of Occupational Therapists in Disaster Rehabilitation in Japan: An Analysis Using the Text Mining Method

Introduction / Rationale: Japan is a country that experiences many large-scale natural disasters. Large-scale natural disasters disrupt the lives of victims and have serious effects on their physical and mental health. Occupational therapists(OTs) help survivors improve their everyday life problems and environments, but their exact role in disaster rehabilitation of Japan is unclear.

Objectives: This study aims to analyze the current state of disaster rehabilitation in Japan through text mining of literature written from the perspective of OTs, clarifying the role of OTs in future disaster rehabilitation.

Methods / Approach: We conducted a computerized database search using the keyword "disaster rehabilitation." We excluded articles that did not mention OTs or were unrelated to disaster rehabilitation. Text mining was performed on the full text of obtained articles.

Results / Practice Implications: Text mining was applied to nine selected articles, comprising 23,252 words. The most frequent terms were "activity," "support," and "JRAT" (Japan Disaster Rehabilitation Assistance Team).

The co-occurrence network indicated that it is important to address four issues in disaster rehabilitation in Japan: [Coordination with the Disaster Management Headquarters], [Collaboration with the government and medical institutions], [Support activities at evacuation centers], and [Pre-disaster preparation].

Conclusion / Contribution to the Occupational Therapy Profession: In order for OTs to fulfill their role in disaster rehabilitation, we believe it is important for OTs to engage in community building with local governments, medical institutions, and local residents during peacetime, for OTs in neighboring areas to familiarize themselves with one another, and to develop OTs with knowledge of disaster support through training and education before a disaster occurs.
