Advancing Global Occupational Therapy Through the Scholarship of Knowledge Discovery in Practice

Objectives: This presentation introduces a framework for recognizing and elevating the scholarly practice-based contributions of occupational therapy practitioners globally. The model supports knowledge generation that is responsive to local needs, sustainable, and aligned with WFOT’s mission to advance health and well-being through occupational therapy.

Methods / Approach: Through analysis of global trends in healthcare and occupational therapy practice, this model was developed to highlight how practitioners discover and apply knowledge in diverse contexts. The model emphasizes practice-based inquiry through ten categories such as program development/ evaluation, advocacy, innovation, implementation, clinical tool development, and quality improvement, utilizing a rigorous approach that results in transferable solutions to practice-focused needs.

Results / Practice Implications: By embracing practice scholarship as a vital component of professional growth, this model strengthens the integration of occupational therapy within health systems worldwide. It provides a mechanism for practitioners to share insights, improve service delivery, enhance systems within healthcare and education, and contribute to the global evidence base, particularly in regions where traditional research opportunities may be limited.

Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: The Scholarship of Knowledge Discovery in Practice model empowers occupational therapy practitioners to drive meaningful change in their communities. By broadening the scope of scholarship, the profession can better respond to global health priorities, ensuring that occupational therapy remains a dynamic and impactful force in improving lives worldwide. This model provides significant affordances to occupational therapy globally by expanding opportunities for promotion for clinical track faculty within academic settings and creates opportunities for occupational therapists to utilize expertise to increase our  circle of influence within healthcare and education.
