Difficulties faced by occupational therapy students in the fieldwork education of psychiatric conditions

Introduction: Fieldwork education is an essential part of professional development in occupational therapy education. It is inevitable that there will be difficulties and challenges in the process of role change. In addition to personal adjustment, the support from supervisors and the environment is also important.

Objectives: This study aims to explore the difficulties interns face in the field of psychiatry conditions through the weekly solicitude questionnaire.

Methods: From 2023 to 2024, a total of 37 occupational therapy students from 8 occupational therapy departments in Taiwan completed the occupational therapy internship for psychiatric conditions and filled out a weekly solicitude questionnaire with two open-ended questions, including what they feel competent and difficult to do weekly. Difficulties faced by students were identified using content analysis.

Results: Following the content analysis of the data, time management, assignment requirements and interpersonal adaptation were identified.

Conclusion: The fieldwork educators should focus on students' learning experience and provide guidance accordingly. By adjusting teaching methods, educators can facilitate student learning and help students adapt.
