Burning In, Not Out: A New Paradigm for Addressing Burnout and Living a Life of Alignment

Introduction: Burnout is a global issue, affecting individuals across all sectors. Existing frameworks fail to address the need for alignment with core values, purpose and identity – key elements for well-being. The Burn In model fills this gap, helping individuals move beyond burnout and reclaim a life aligned with their true self.

Objective: The Burn In model offers a framework for understanding burnout and the factors that help restore one’s inner flame. In contrast to burnout, which diminishes our inner flame, "burning in" is the process of rekindling, nurturing and sustaining that fire – representing alignment with values, purpose, and identity.

Approach: The Burn In model uses natural elements – rain and wind (environmental factors), logs and sticks (personal factors) and embers (relational influences) – to illustrate forces that shape our inner flame. It rejects reductionist thinking in favor of a holistic view, recognizing the dynamic and interconnected nature of human experience.

Practice Implications: The Burn In model serves as a practical tool in the evaluation and intervention of individuals, teams, organizations, and communities receiving OT services. Its use of fire and natural elements can be understood across cultures. It also empowers OTPs to evaluate and enhance their own well-being, strengthening their capacity to deliver sustainable, high-quality services.

Contribution to the Profession: The Burn In model provides a unique approach to burnout, making a significant contribution to the OT profession. It supports individuals and OTPs facing burnout and enriches the field by fostering research, educational strategies and community initiatives, enhancing the visibility of OT as a profession capable of addressing contemporary challenges.
