Rebellion in Routine: The Occupational Identity of the Punk Community

Introduction. The punk community is recognized as a subcultural group that exists in contrast to the dominant culture. In Indonesia, the punk community is often perceived as alternative subculture that challenges mainstream norms and frequently positioned at the margins of mainstream society due to its distinct lifestyle. Despite this, the community engages in diverse occupations that reflect its core principles & meanings.
Objective. This study aims to explore how occupational engagement is shaped among individuals within the punk community in Salatiga, Indonesia.
Methods. This qualitative ethnographic study used a non-participatory design. Respondents were selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were collected via in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, analyzed thematically. Credibility was ensured through source triangulation.
Result. The findings reveal that occupational engagement in the punk community is driven by core values of anti-mainstream ideology, egalitarianism, and a strong DIY (Do-It-Yourself) ethos. These values shape alternative work practices, self-sufficiency, and collective resource-sharing. Beyond survival, occupation holds deeper meaning as a form of self-expression, a way to contribute and care for others, and a means of strengthening social bonds and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.
Conclusion. This study highlights how the punk community’s occupational engagement is rooted in its core values, shaping alternative work, identity expression, and social connections. These findings broaden the understanding of occupation beyond mainstream norms, emphasizing self-determination, community support, and belonging.
