Introduction / Rationale: Caregivers of individuals undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) face significant physical, emotional, and psychosocial challenges. Many lack adequate support and education to navigate these complex demands. Telehealth cancer caregiver interventions may offer a promising solution by providing accessible, structured guidance to caregivers. However, feasibility data on implementing such a program within an occupational therapy framework remains limited.
Objectives: This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of a telehealth-based educational and support program designed for HCT caregivers. Specifically, we assessed participant engagement, program adherence, and perceived benefits in managing caregiving responsibilities.
Methods / Approach: A mixed-methods feasibility study was conducted with caregivers recruited from a transplant center. The intervention included structured telehealth sessions focusing on education, coping strategies, and occupational balance. Feasibility outcomes included recruitment and retention rates, session attendance, and participant feedback. Qualitative interviews explored caregivers’ experiences and perceived utility of the program.
Results / Practice Implications: Caregivers demonstrated high engagement, with 100% attending all sessions. Participants reported increased confidence in caregiving, improved stress management, and enhanced awareness of self-care strategies. Barriers included scheduling constraints and technology challenges. Findings support the integration of telehealth interventions in occupational therapy practice to improve caregiver support.
Conclusion / Contribution to the Occupational Therapy Profession: This study highlights the feasibility of telehealth as a viable platform for caregiver education and support in HCT contexts. Occupational therapists can leverage these findings to develop scalable interventions that enhance caregiver well-being and optimize patient outcomes. Future research should explore long-term impacts and broader implementation strategies.
