Telehealth as a Sustainable Resource in the SUS: A Scoping Review

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased use of telehealth as a means of ensuring access to health services.

Objectives: To analyze and critically examine the role of Information and Communication Technologies in maintaining health care services during the pandemic within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).

Methods: A scoping review was conducted, broadly addressing the epidemiological situation of SARS-CoV-2 (2019–2023). Studies were selected from the PubMed, APA PsycNet, and Cochrane Library databases using Health Sciences Descriptors related to the research topic.

Results: Findings from eight studies that met the inclusion criteria were collected. The selected studies analyzed the application of telehealth in public health, highlighting evidence of its feasibility in Brazil, along with considerations regarding its limitations.

Conclusion: This research suggests that telehealth has significant potential to establish itself as a safe, accessible, and cost-effective means of delivering public health services, thereby contributing to the country’s sustainable development. However, achieving this requires greater investment in the technological infrastructure of public health systems, the promotion of digital literacy among the population, and broader dissemination of this tool’s potential for both users and professionals.
