Student perceptions and expectations in occupational therapy programs in Chile: A cross-sectional study

Introduction

Occupational therapy (OT) education prepares future professionals for clinical and community-based practice. In Chile, the expansion of OT programs has increased student enrolment; however, little is known about students' perceptions of their academic training, student experience, career expectations, and the quality assurance mechanisms in place. Understanding these factors is crucial for enhancing educational strategies, aligning curricula with workforce demands, and fostering evidence-based improvements in OT education to better prepare graduates for evolving professional challenges.

Objectives

To analyse student perceptions and expectations regarding their academic training, student experience, career outlook, and continuous improvement processes in Chilean OT programs.

Methods

This cross-sectional quantitative study surveyed OT students enrolled in Chilean universities. The questionnaire was developed through expert validation and a pilot test, ensuring methodological rigour. Ethical approval was obtained (Project 156-2024). The survey assessed curriculum structure, teaching quality, internship experiences, career prospects, and perceptions of institutional improvement. The study will be launched at the beginning of the academic year in March 2025. Descriptive and inferential analyses will be conducted using RStudio.

Practice Implications

The study will provide valuable insights into student satisfaction, academic expectations, and professional outlooks, identifying key areas for program enhancement. Findings will inform curriculum development, support accreditation efforts, and contribute to improving OT education in Chile.

Significance to the Occupational Therapy Profession

This study addresses a critical gap in OT education research, providing empirical evidence to guide policy and institutional strategies. Enhancing educational quality is essential to preparing competent professionals and ensuring occupational therapy’s impact in diverse practice settings.
