Introduction
Professional associations play a crucial role in shaping the development of a profession. However, establishing a robust and influential association can be challenging, particularly in emerging practice contexts such as Nigeria. The transformation of Occupational Therapy (OT) in Nigeria between 2013 and 2020 exemplifies how strategic planning and proactive leadership in professional association can revitalize a dormant association, fostering professional growth and increasing public awareness of occupational therapy.
Objective
To explores the strategic approaches that facilitated the development of occupational therapy in Nigeria between 2013 and 2020, offering insights into advancing occupational therapy through professional associations in similar contexts.
Methods
A retrospective study was conducted, evaluating OTAN’s activities from 2013 to 2020 through document review and comparative analysis of “OTAN dispensations”. The emerged themes: the association’s initial situation, priority needs, strategic interventions, and resulting impacts on the development of occupational therapy in Nigeria were analyzed and categorized.
Results
Five core strategies engaged by OTAN were identified to be central to the development of OT in the OTAN golden era. These are incorporation, professional advocacy, continuing professional development, stakeholder engagement, and standardization/quality assurance. These strategies led to increased utilization of occupational therapy services, improved employment opportunities, professional growth of members, national and global integration, and enhanced visibility in global scholarship.
Conclusion
This study highlights the critical role of professional associations in advancing OT. Through strategic interventions tailored to local contexts, associations can drive professional growth, enhance service delivery, and strengthen their global presence, ultimately positioning OT more prominently within mainstream society.
