Introduction / Rationale: Occupational therapy is essential for enabling older adults with low vision to age safely and maintain occupational engagement within the home. Home lighting significantly affects performance and differs greatly from lighting in clinical settings. This presentation will examine current occupational therapy home lighting assessments and interventions based on a topical literature review and will include environmental lighting, task lighting, and related compensatory strategies.
Objectives: To present findings on home lighting assessments and interventions in occupational therapy that support occupational performance and home safety for older adults with visual impairment.
Methods / Approach: A literature review of English language articles in peer-reviewed journals (2000-2025) will be conducted using CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases.
Results / Practice Implications: The review will summarize current practices to improve occupational therapy interventions, promoting home-based occupational engagement, participation, and safety. Findings will highlight the importance of home assessments, especially lighting evaluations, for older adults with low vision.
Conclusion / Significance to the Occupational Therapy Profession: This presentation will provide occupational therapy practitioners with evidence-based resources to optimize home lighting interventions and improve client outcomes.
