Effectiveness of Occupational Therapy Interventions for Individuals with Visual Deficiency: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Visual Deficiency affects several aspects of a person’s life, limiting their ability to engage in essential activities and affecting their overall quality of life. Occupational therapy interventions stand out for their unique approach to improving the quality of life for individuals with visual impairments, thus promoting greater autonomy. Objective: To systematically review the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions for individuals with visual impairments in promoting their ability to perform daily tasks, hence enhancing their autonomy and well-being. Method: The systematic search included studies published from 2010 to January 2025. The databases consulted were PubMed, Cochrane, CINAHL, Medline, and Scopus. Quality assessment tools were then used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies. Results: Out of the 2,784 articles found, only eight met the inclusion criteria. The eligible studies evaluated a total of 673 subjects with visual impairment, of whom 599 were adults or older adults, and 75 were children. The interventions were grouped into 3 themes: the first focused on multimodal sensory training programs , the second evaluated educational programs focused on self-management and prevention, and the third examined environmental adaptations and task modifications. Conclusion: Our findings have many implications for clinical practice and provide a framework for developing and implementing guidelines for occupational therapy interventions with this population.
