Outcome of Caretaker – Occupational therapist collaboration in involving patients admitted for mental health treatment in activities of daily living at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.

Introduction Mental health patients admitted in hospitals with few, or no Occupational Therapist often receive little or no contact with the therapist(s) for their much-needed rehabilitation needs. Aim To determine the impact of Caretaker – Occupational Therapist collaboration in the involvement of patients in activities of daily living while being admitted at mental health department of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. Methodology 50 Caregivers were enrolled in the study on the first day of admission of their patients for mental health treatment. An interview was conducted with the caregivers to determine mental and physical status of their patients and themselves. An earlier designed daily routine was presented to the caregiver to be implemented with their clients with support from the Therapist. The caregivers were subjected to the same interview upon discharge from the hospital. A control group of 50 caregivers was also recruited. Comparative data analysis was conducted and results established. Results There was a remarkable improvement in the health outcome of patients at the treatment center. Conclusion The purposeful engagement of caregivers in the rehabilitation of their patients yields better health outcomes of admitted mental health patients.
