The challenge of connecting across difference: he work of the International Social Transformation through Occupation Network (ISTTON)

Introduction: The International Social Transformation through Occupation Network (ISTTON) connects a global, multi-sectoral community, dedicated to harnessing occupation to contribute to social transformations that reduce social, health, and occupational inequalities. Recently, a global rise in expressions of coloniality, racism and patriarchy, are manifesting in increased xenophobia, resistance to social policies, and challenges to the principles of human rights. Developing and sustaining critical movements to resist these tendencies is crucial, yet taking such a stance presents the challenge of positionality.

Objectives: This poster presentation will present: challenges of the network in sustaining critical stances in regressive contexts, key questions and priorities developed, and propose collaboration to continue discussing these challenges, collectively and in solidarity.

Approach: The network coordinating group is open to all members. As well as preparing network action, this group is discussing positionality in network settings, through addressing contradictions raised in connection with the network.

Implications to the occupational therapy profession: We are developing questions to underpin our reflections and transformative actions, such as, what is meant by ‘doing good’, what is the vision; what are the theoretical foundations and values underlying that perspective; where is power located and how may that be challenged?

Conclusions: Reflecting together is a form of occupational analysis applied to our participation in the network as the coordinating group. This positionality analysis is based on critical examination of our experiences and practices, our collective critical stance and (counter-hegemonic) direction.
