“Revitalizing Resilience”- Strategies for Supporting Struggling Associations in Challenging Contexts: A Case Study of the Zimbabwe Association of Occupational Therapists

Introduction

Professional associations, like the Zimbabwe Association of Occupational Therapists (ZAOT), significantly influence their fields but face socio-economic, political, and environmental challenges. In Zimbabwe, where the healthcare system marginalizes occupational therapy (OT), ZAOT struggles due to economic instability, inadequate funding, and lack of professional recognition. These issues contribute to decreased membership, limited professional development, and the emigration of therapists. The political climate further complicates advocacy efforts for OT rights.

Objectives

The paper aims to analyze the specific challenges faced by ZAOT, propose strategies for revitalization and sustainability, and assess the impact of these strategies on the association's effectiveness.

Methods

Consultative dialogues and member feedback were utilized to identify challenges. Key strategies included strengthening international partnerships, utilizing digital platforms for networking, and launching advocacy initiatives to enhance OT's visibility in healthcare. Community engagement and public awareness campaigns aimed to elevate the profession's profile and empower local practitioners.

Results

These strategies fostered knowledge exchange and potential financial support, ensuring continuous professional development through digital tools. Advocacy efforts successfully integrated OT into national health strategies, reinforcing the association's foundation.

Conclusion

The intervention demonstrated improved member engagement and professional development for ZAOT. Key lessons highlight the importance of adaptability and proactive engagement. Sharing these experiences can inspire global OT networks to collaborate and enhance the resilience of professional associations facing similar challenges.
