Introduction / Rationale: Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) hold an inspiring role in participating in Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) Hubs, which utilize a mentorship model and technology to disseminate knowledge surrounding a particular diagnosis/issue.
The ECHO model uses a cross discipline “all teach, all learn” framework to educate participants/the Hub itself to make knowledge accessible to all. This model provides education using telementoring, support, and knowledge to clients in underserved areas. ECHO has been adopted by organizations globally, particularly in the healthcare sector, to address knowledge gaps.
Objectives: Describe the ECHO Autism Anderson framework and OTPs inspirational/innovative role.
Explore ECHO topic areas and the next steps for OTPs participation.
Methods / Approach: An OTPs perspective will be shared as a current Hub team member viewing clients through the lens of occupation. Other valuable Hub team members will be discussed including a Parent Advocate. Each member draws on experience utilizing professional reasoning to provide solutions.
Results / Practice Implications: Components of the ECHO Hub will be identified: a complex Case Presentation, Clarifying Questions, Evidenced-Based Recommendations, and a Knowledge Burst presentation. Participants will explore the diverse ECHO Hubs available, identify the inspiring role OTPs have, recognize the opportunity to work across disciplines as a Hub team member, and to share the value of occupation.
Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: Participants will explore their professional goals to discern an ECHO topic area of interest, strategies to become an ECHO Hub member, and resources available to support success in this innovative endeavor to expand OTPs role to support those in underserved communities or those with challenging clinical cases.
