Addressing mental health challenges in people with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis: a literature review

Introduction: People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis frequently experience significant mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety, which adversely affect their quality of life and treatment outcomes. Understanding the prevalence and impact of these mental health challenges is crucial for developing comprehensive care strategies.

Objectives: This literature review aims to synthesize existing research on the mental health of people with CKD undergoing hemodialysis, focusing on the prevalence of depression and anxiety, associated risk factors, and potential occupational therapy interventions to support psychological well-being.

Methodology: A systematic search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Studies published from 2015-2025 were reviewed, with inclusion criteria focusing on mental health outcomes in hemodialysis patients.

Results: The review indicates a high prevalence of depression and anxiety among people with CKD on hemodialysis. Common risk factors include younger age, unemployment, social isolation, and long-term dialysis treatment. Studies highlight the negative impact of these mental health conditions on patients’ quality of life, treatment adherence, and overall well-being. Some research suggests that multidisciplinary interventions, including psychosocial support and occupational therapy approaches, may help mitigate these effects.

Conclusions: Mental health concerns are prevalent among people with CKD undergoing hemodialysis, necessitating integrated care approaches. Occupational therapy may play a crucial role in addressing psychosocial needs, promoting engagement in meaningful activities, and improving overall well-being. Further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of specific interventions and their impact on mental health outcomes.
