Occupational Therapy and Education: Towards a Radical Inclusion in Latin America

Introduction: In various Latin American countries, occupational therapists consider Education a significant field of practice. However, recent research highlights the need to expand the theoretical and methodological frameworks guiding this professional insertion, steering it towards Radical Inclusion—that is, ensuring the presence and active participation of all children, adolescents, and young people in schooling processes.

Objective: To present and analyze the main contributions of Latin American occupational therapists in the field of Education.

Methodology: A mapping review was conducted, complemented by in-depth interviews with occupational therapists identified through the review and existing partnerships with researchers in the region.

Results: A total of 125 texts addressing "occupational therapy and school/education" were gathered. Additionally, five interviews were conducted with occupational therapists from Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. Findings indicate a predominance of practices focused on children with disabilities, primarily through individualized approaches, but also encompassing collective and community-based dimensions. Simultaneously, there is a growing number of initiatives targeting early childhood education for all children, support for young people in situations of social vulnerability, and inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education. Furthermore, academic works have been identified that theorize and critically examine the field.

Conclusion: The expansion and diversification of knowledge production in this area have been significant. We hope that the information and analyses provided offer theoretical and practical insights to further strengthen and expand the role of occupational therapists in the educational sector.
