Enhanced Stroke upper extremity rehabilitation program: a retrospective analysis on motor recovery in subacute stroke

Introduction / Rationale: Stroke are associated with disabilities in terms of reduced Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s). The upper extremity is it’s known victim. Literature review shows that there is a paucity of high-quality evidence of rehab interventions using advanced technology in a lab environment which have been brought into practice locally in Qatar.

Objectives: To identifying the impact of advanced technology used in ENhanced Stroke Upper Extremity REhabilitation (ENSURE) Program on hand function skills improvement in patient with stroke.

Methods: It was an observational, retrospective descriptive study. Total 207 patients with stroke receiving rehab services in ENSURE program during the study period in Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI) which is a member of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Doha,Qatar was selected for this study. Data had been collected using patients’ charts from Cerner database. Alphanumeric notations coded the subject data, and the patients' names were kept anonymous and only identifiable by their health card number. All Statistical analyses had been done using statistical packages SPSS 27.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL).

Result: The results of this retrospective study are promising as the ENSURE program improved the functional abilities of the patients and, clinically, increased life satisfaction levels amongst patients and their families.

Conclusion / Contribution to OT profession: The program helped stroke patients get more independence in their daily life, work, and so maximum participation in society. However, it is acknowledged that further studies are needed involving larger samples of stroke patients in order to carry complete functionality evaluation.
