Integrating Yoga Into Occuaptional Therapy for Behavioral Health: A Holistic Approach

Introduction / Rationale: Occupational therapists (OTs) play a critical role in addressing mental health challenges by promoting self-regulation, emotional resilience, and functional participation in daily life. Yoga, with its evidence-based benefits for stress reduction, sensory modulation, and emotional regulation, aligns with the core principles of OT in behavioral health.

This presentation explores the rationale for incorporating yoga into OT practice, emphasizing its therapeutic impact on nervous system regulation and occupational engagement.

Objectives:

  1. Understanding the physiological and psychological mechanisms of yoga

  2. Describe the effects of flight/flight/freeze on function

  3. Identifying appropriate applications for diverse behavioral health populations

  4. Developing strategies for integrating yoga-based interventions within OT practice.

Methods / Approach: The methodology includes a review of current literature, case study analysis, and practical demonstrations of yoga-based techniques tailored to OT settings. Attendees will gain insight into specific asanas (postures), breathwork, and mindfulness practices that can be adapted for clients with anxiety, trauma histories, and sensory processing challenges.

Results / Practice Implications: Practice implications highlight how yoga can enhance self-regulation, improve coping strategies, and support participation in meaningful occupations.

Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: This presentation contributes to the field by providing OTs with an evidence-informed framework for incorporating yoga into treatment plans, ultimately expanding the therapeutic toolbox for behavioral health interventions.
