Introduction/Rationale: Application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) within post stroke rehabilitation has the potential to transform therapeutic approaches including integration of assessment/data analysis, personalizing therapies and documentation, promoting home program adherence, and supporting occupational performance. Given the rapid development of AI/ML, it is critical that we define how current therapists perceive its current and potential uses and design new technologies based on the therapists’ and clients’ needs, supports, and barriers.
Objectives:
• Assess therapists’ current perspectives on AI/ML in post-stroke rehabilitation.
• Examine at least two perceived barriers to potential application of AI/ML.
Methods/Approach: This mixed methods study includes quantitative survey data collected pre/ post an educational webinar, as well as qualitative focus group analysis that includes therapist attitudes and their experiences with AI/ML, practical applications to using AI/ML in a variety of therapeutic settings, as well as the difficulties associated. The recruited therapists include occupational and physical therapy practitioners from the United States and Asia. Individuals included in the study had to have a caseload of 30% persons with stroke and speak English.
Results/Practice implications: Results of nine focus groups demonstrate that practitioners are open to a future partnered with AI/ML with potential applications that enhance assessment and extend intervention. However, they are hesitant to commit to utilization of AI/ML given potential misuse and difficulties with the technology.
Conclusion/Significance to the occupational therapy profession: The implementation of effective application of AI/ML is dependent on the willingness and attitudes of practitioners. Therefore, proper understanding of their perceptions is critical in future technology development and findings from this investigation can be used to inform future development of AI/ML application in stroke rehabilitation.
