Creativity applied to assistive technology from primary school

Introduction/Rationale: Service learning (SL) is a suitable methodology for engaging students in social projects while enhancing motivation in the learning process. Assistive technology (AT) consists of resources designed to promote and improve individuals’ participation in daily activities from a compensatory approach. However, AT faces three main challenges: high costs, limited customization, and aesthetics that could be improved. This study presents an SL experience conducted with fourth-grade primary school students.

Objectives: (1) To promotecreativity, problem-solving skills and social awareness among primary school students. (2) To increase awareness of the occupational needs of people with disabilities.

Methods/Approach: This SL project was implemented with 25 primary school students during the 2023/2024 academic year. The methodology combined expository lessons, user experience sessions, and hands-on workshops focused on designing low-cost AT solutions. Students were responsible for managing materials and constructing the products, under the guidance and supervision of occupational therapists in collaboration with the classroom teacher.

Results/Practice implications: Primary school students designed 20 low-cost ATs to meet the occupational needs of individuals with disabilities. The occupations for which they were designed included daily living activities, instrumental activities, education and leisure. The project culminated in a public community center exhibition showcasing the students’ work.

Conclusions/Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: This project fostered motivation, knowledge acquisition, and active engagement among primary school students in designing compensatory solutions through personalized ATs. By connecting with real-life cases and occupational needs, students developed greater awareness of disability-related challenges and enhanced their creativity in addressing real-world problems.
